Jeffree Star and Manny Mua Receiving Hate Comments

Hello beautiful ladies,

This post is a bit different to normal, though it was through watching makeup videos on YouTube that I stumbled across this one from Jeffree Starr and Manny Mua. If you want to watch the video that started this post, click here. Please be warned, there is quite a bit of hateful comments and swearing.

Now, I’m not this huge, feet worshipping fan of either Jeffree or Manny. In fact, I’d only just subscribed to Jeffree’s YouTube channel about 4 weeks ago, after watching a few and deciding his reviews were honest. This week though, while I was up one night because I couldn’t stop sneezing, I decided to watch a few YouTube videos (I had notifications for 67). Anyway, one of the first videos that was in my subscribed list was ‘Reading mean hate comments feat. Manny Mua’.img_6036

Okay, that had my attention. Why are they getting hate comments? So, I watched it, and was disgusted with what people have actually publicly commented on their videos with. Before I go on, I just want to clarify that its not that I’m defending Jeffree or Manny personally because, as with anyone we meet or see in the media, we can love them or hate them (or anywhere in between that spectrum). What I do have a problem with is the need to personally attack someone through social media.

The comments read out weren’t even the worst of what they receive, and they are both receiving a lot every day. I will say that Jeffree, even though these people were being so nasty towards him, wouldn’t actually show the screen of his computer to reveal names, which he explained that he didn’t want hate comments directed at these people. He won me over with his integrity right there.

Personal attacks on celebrities is nothing new – magazines, radio stations, social media  etc. have bagged celebrities for years. However, a lot will say that they choose not to read or listen to media in general. Both Jeffree and Manny get the comments on their personal YouTube channel. Their choice to view these comments just isn’t there.

So, why do people feel this need to write hateful things. Why not simply move on to another video? Why bother even commenting? That’s what I don’t understand – why can’t people just move on and watch someone they do like?img_6037

Anyway, that one video made me a fan of Jeffree’s and Manny’s because they have both handled the whole situation with integrity while still opening people’s eyes about it.

If you made it this far, thank you and I promise I’ll be back next week to my usual beauty posts and leave the socio-political rants alone. (I just felt so strongly about this one.)

  1. I agree with you, if for whatever reason you don’t like or agree, with regard to social media and celebrities, just unfollow don’t read and move on. The hate monger is a cowardly individual really. I doubt anyone would be so hateful to someone’s face.

    1. Exactly, there’s no need for that type of personal attack on anyone. I’m not usually so vocal about social politics because everyone is entitled to their opinion but this is not acceptable. Thank you for reading 😊

  2. I agree with you! As for me, I’ve been their fan for quite some time and I, too, love that about Jeffree. He’s just real and honest and true to himself. There were past issues, though, that did not pass other (PERFECT) people’s standards and they use that to spread hate. Jeffree just recently called out Too Faced owner for underpaying Nikkie Tutorials and for throwing shades at Tarte.

    1. I don’t know what the past issues are about – I must admit I get a bit behind with what’s happening when I’m busy, which is why I had so many unwatched YouTube videos – but people need to move on. Unfollow and don’t buy the product if they feel strongly but don’t personally attack someone. Thank you for reading and commenting your opinion too 🙌

      1. I know this post was in April and I donot know if you will read this or not. I am new to your blog and I just saw this post. No matter what Jeffree star said or did in the past no one is allow to leave hateful comments on his posts or videos. The words from ours mouth do have an effect on people. However, you stated that you donot know what the past issues were and people should move on. Now Jeffree Star did said some pretty nasty things about people of color and I do know he apologized for it. As a person of color, when I hear and saw these words I was hurt. No lying. Even though I was hurt, it gives me no reasons or other people to say the same hurtful things back to him. If we want to be fair and honest, for you to say people should move on without knowing what he said or did is unfair. It is almost like me saying, you are hurt and even though I don’t know why or what hurt you. You should move on. Iam not here to disrespect you, play the race card or make drama on your post. We are not living in a perfect world and some people do say mean and hurtful things about people base on their skin color and I know people can’t hold on to that forever. However we should look at both side. Also, I understand that this is your blog and you are enttitle to your opinion.

      2. Thank you for reading my post and taking the time to comment. I do appreciate your view to the topic.

I knew when I wrote it that I didn’t have the whole story. I have been aware that Jeffree does say some things that are hurtful to people, not just to people of colour. The incident you mention here he apologised for, which even though can’t take his words back, he recognises that he crossed a line. Whether the apology is sincere or not, we may never know.

What I really wanted to emphasise though is that if people don’t like someone, for whatever reason, and it may be that Jeffree lost a lot of fans because he was so hateful, that people need to unsubscribe to his social media and boycott his products rather than attack him personally. It just continues this cycle of hate.

I also realise that there is a lot of hate, resentment, fear and ignorance within the world today but history does show that if people just united against it, laws, ideas or prejudices can be changed without violence and the need to continue the cycle.

I really do appreciate your honesty on my blog without being disrespectful.

  3. One thing I really love about him is that he’s so honest, that regardless of the fact that he loves a certain company, if that company’s product doesn’t work, he’ll straight-forwardly say that.
But anyway, haters can always find a reason to hate on others. It’s just so natural for them.

    1. That’s what I thought too – his opinions were honest. I want the truth from people with products and I know some will work for some people and not others but it allows me to weigh all the info up and make a decision. I’m always going to be honest but I hope I don’t ever get attacked for it.
