Hello beautiful ladies,

I had a dilemma this month with my rewards as I had the Nars Loaded Eyeshadow Palette and the Unfiltered Cheek Palette on my list for completing 3 of the 4. I wanted them both so badly but then it was announced that Nars would be selling in China and therefore, would no longer be cruelty free.

I’m not going to pretend I’m 100% cruelty free in my makeup (though it may influence my decision if products are similar), and I don’t want to shame anyone who is still buying Nars but when I found out, I was disappointed.

I’ve been involved in managing multi million dollar businesses and also smaller owner operated ones and I know that at the end of the day, its all about profit, otherwise we wouldn’t do it. I also understand that the Chinese market is potentially the largest in the world so naturally, businesses want a piece of that. What I don’t understand is how a company that had previously prided itself on being cruelty free has decided to enter this market.

Anyway, after much thought, I decided to skip the Nars and choose again.

Goal No. 1 – completed 13/6/17

Goal No. 2 – completed 30/6/17 – Too Faced Natural Love Eye Shadow Collection – $85 (1 and 2 had to be completed)

Goal No. 3 – not completed

Goal No. 4 – completed 30/6/17 – Too Faced Love Light Prismatic Highlighter in You Light Up My Life – $44

I came in under budget at $129 but couldn’t think of anything else I was desperate for so I left it rather than impulse buy.

I am looking forward to swatching and playing with this palette although its more neutral than I’ve been used to lately. A few months ago, this would have been my perfect palette.

I am so happy I’ve finally bought one of these gorgeous highlighters. I was drawn to the gold one but I really should have bought the ice white one now because I don’t have one whereas I have quite a few golden highlighters.

So, am I satisfied with my second choices? Yes and no. I still would have preferred the Nars products but this dilemma has made me think about the cruelty free debate a lot more. I don’t know where I stand completely in this regard to be honest so maybe that will become a special blog post when I’ve decided where I want to stand.

    1. I love Mac too and I have some of their products. I don’t know how I feel about going completely cruelty free but to go from cruelty free to not cruelty free is like a step backwards. Then, you’ve got most drugstore makeup not being cruelty free either. It’s a lot for me (as anyone else that makes the decision) to think about.

      1. Exactly, I think it should be more about the availability. In USA it’s easier to get your hands on cruelty-free makeup items, but in other countries is really hard. I have to travel to South Africa or even UK/Portugal to get some makeup. So I will take what I can get, most of the times.

      2. Australia has its own very small makeup cruelty free range and bigger brands that are cruelty free I can get but the smaller indie brands that the US has (cruelty free) have quite large shipping fees so that makes me think twice about buying products.

        I can imagine it would be even harder for you and the cost of shipping would be just as expensive.

      3. Yeah, here we have to pay for the product+shipping+100%+ taxes for the product + VAT so it gets very expensive to order online. it’s more than double the price of the product.

      4. I’ve heard quite a few countries that have to pay tax on their purchases as well. We pay the exchange rate (generally 72cents is $1US) then shipping which is why the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill palette worked out to be about $110 I think and I just couldn’t bring myself to get it.

      5. yeah, it’s a lot. that’s why I have to think twice before ordering online, sometimes it’s better to wait out for people coming to my country that can bring me the makeup.

      6. That’s an option of course. At least you miss all the products not worth buying after everyone’s reviewed them 🤔
        The makeup you do have access to though has been creating so many great looks lately 😍.

  2. I have a very similar approach to you – I prefer to support cruelty free brands but my collection is certainly not 100% cruelty free. It’s such a big decision, and I know I should make the switch but it does get difficult, especially when you’re constantly tempted with pretty makeup, you tend to forget who tests on animals and who doesn’t and just get swept up in the hype! Good for you on rethinking your goals this month and taking a stand ☺️❤️

    1. There’s also the different levels on going cruelty free which really confused me too. A lot of the brands have parent companies that aren’t cruelty free. It’s like the levels for being a vegan.

      I’m going to put a lot of thought into my decision before I commit to any level of cruelty free but this situation has put it into focus at least.

  3. I totally understand your dilemma or ambiguity towards nars and the whole cruelty free stand. I hate animal cruejty but feel hypocritical saying that as I’m unsure I won’t but nars anymore, i don’t have lots but I love the foundation. I think you did the right thing standing by your values and foregoing your first choices.. the toofaced palette is very beautiful and has so many gorgeous shades 💗💗

I love the foundation too and I use it a lot so it’s a difficult decision and I’m not going to say right now that I won’t buy more but until I have made my mind up about where I stand with animal cruelty, I’ll hold off. There’s still a part of me that wishes they’d held out releasing their news until after I’d bought those two items 😜

I thought the same thing…i bet you wished you brought them before the news came out…I love mac too so i do feel slighty torn, I don’t buy lots from them but some products i do love and continue to purchase…so i feel im not one to roar about the cruelty free issue even thougt i buy more from the brands that support it.

      2. I’m exactly the same and feel the same with many brands. I’m definitely not in a position to preach about the situation, it’s just the circumstances I think made me rethink everything but damn, I wanted those palettes so badly 🙈😩
